Although it was in Sherman's path from Atlanta to Savannah and was the site of the main Confederate powder works, Augusta was spared the Union general's torch. And then came reconstruction. The cotton industry was no more, the countryside lay bare, and the resourses of the area's leading families were seriously depleted. But Augusta had one asset that no war could destroy – its climate. By the 1890s, Augusta had become a major resort area, and many of its citizens opened their homes to paying guests. Augusta's first nine-hole golf course was built during the same period by one of the city's hoteliers. The new game from Scotland proved so popular with his guests that the following year an 18-hole course was built on what was soon to become the Augusta Country Club.
